Swedish Chamber Orchestra / Heinz Karl Gruber
Elbphilharmonie Summer
Heinz Karl Gruber, known simply as HK Gruber, is a true Viennese original and a musical all-rounder. After training with the famous boys’ choir Wiener Sängerknaben, he studied the horn, the double bass and composition. Parallel to his work playing the double bass in an orchestra, he began to conduct and compose in the 1960s. In his compositions, he set out to consistently break down the boundaries between classical music, jazz and the chanson.
»Manhattan Broadcasts« recalls the golden era of swing music. Here Gruber adds a drum kit, bongo drums and a solo jazz guitar to the chamber orchestra without further ado. In »Frankenstein!!« he even appears on stage as a chansonnier, mixing snippets of light music with ironically treated clichés from the Romantic repertoire.
This out-of-the-ordinary programme is rounded off with the Second Symphony by Kurt Weill, who became a household name in the early 20th century mainly through his cooperation with Bertolt Brecht: he wrote the score for Brecht’s »Dreigroschenoper«
