»Studio Diary« / Installation by Yulia Mahr
15:00–22:00 / Reflektor Max Richter & Yulia Mahr
Ein Studio im Wald
The British artist Yulia Mahr is an award-winning film-maker, photographer and visual artist. With her husband, the composer Max Richter, she has set up a shared studio in woodlands near Oxford. In their studio, the pair work on compositions, photography and films, developing exciting interdisciplinary art projects together to great international acclaim – among them a film on Richter’s eight-hour work »Sleep«. As part of their jointly curated »Reflektor« weekend in the Elbphilharmonie, Yulia Mahr’s exhibition »Studio Diary« provides insights into the artist couple’s inspirational world – and the philosophy behind their works.
Please note: admission is free but visitors must register when they arrive. There may be short waiting times due to the restricted capacity.
Mahr sketched out the audio and image material for the installation during a quiet week in August 2021, just after the studio was completed. In »Studio Diary« she presents a blend of poetic documentary film and a narrative that takes the observer through the space, in the process touching on the big questions of artistic life: how does creativity arise? What effect can a space have? And how do art and nature interrelate? The vision of the two studio founders is consistently present: to connect art with social and ecological action.
