Staatskapelle Berlin / Daniel Barenboim
5 Years of Elbphilharmonie – 2G+
Joie de vivre and wistfulness
When this literally well-rehearsed team returns to Hamburg, Daniel Barenboim will have been music director of the Staatskapelle Berlin for no less than 30 years. Now the orchestra and its »conductor for life« perform all four Schumann symphonies on two consecutive evenings, as the highlight of a week marking the Elbphilharmonie’s fifth anniversary.
In the second concert, we encounter the exuberant Rhenish joie de vivre of the Third and the stirring energy and wistfulness of the Fourth Symphony. Since their CD recording in 2003, Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin have mastered both works to perfection: »darkly primed and with a sense of Schumann’s incomparable euphoria« (takt1).
