The concert series »Winter Journeys« is devoted to Schubert’s famous song cycle of that name, reflected and interpreted in different genres. The series opens with a reading by brilliant Austrian actress Sophie Rois from the play by Elfriede Jelinek, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. »A stranger I arrived, a stranger I depart«: taking the opening line of Schubert’s cycle as her starting point, her lyrical self embarks on an intellectual journey that leads her through her own biography and the madness of our time. Solitude and withdrawal within oneself, alienation and perversion, expulsion, transience and failure are the existential issues addressed in the text, which leads into a ruthless reckoning-up with Jelinek’s own role as a writer. One of the great modern-day theatre scripts.
