Silent Film with Live Music: Hamlet
Elbphilharmonie Summer
Shakespeare’s tragedy »Hamlet« remains one of the best-known plays ever written. The story has been filmed many times: among the most unusual screen versions is the one produced by Svend Gade and Heinz Schall, which was the biggest cinema hit of the year in 1921 Germany. The lead role was played by Danish actress Asta Nielsen.
The National Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. commissioned the Filmharmonia Duo to create a new film soundtrack: the musicians selected works by the Bach sons Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christian and Wilhelm Friedemann, and produced clever arrangements of them for organ and piano as well as harpsichord and soprano.
