Silent Film Concert / Charlie Chaplin: Modern Times
With »Modern Times«, the Symphoniker Hamburg, under the direction of Stefanos Tsialis, continues the long-standing tradition of film concerts and turns the Grand Hall into a cinema. Charlie Chaplin’s 1936 classic silent film is shown live.
One of the major issues of the 21st century is whether people can or cannot say goodbye to alienated labour. Are the modern times that Charlie Chaplin visualised in his 1936 tragicomedy over? Or are they a common symbol of everyday working life today? Time pressure, social tension, fast-food, blind consumption binges and loss of job - no one disagrees that these issues characterise today’s world as in the years of assembly line work and the Great Depression. But where is today’s rebellion? In his amusingly entertaining manner, Charlie Chaplin shows how to throw a spanner in the works and question the system in a joint effort.
