From sample to live event
With the trio »Brandt Brauer Frick«, Daniel Brandt gave electronic dance music its body back. Live-produced techno tracks allowed the three Berlin musicians to break the control loop between clubbers and the DJ beat magicians. Sounds buzzing forcefully around the world’s clubs as pure digital information became impressive analogue auditory phenomena and performative live music moments. Somewhere between club beats and new classical music, these sounds are created by instrumentalists of flesh and blood. Projects like this forced the sample culture back to the source of the original sound. Analogue sound generators and live ensembles have since become part of the techno repertoire. With his second solo project »Channels«, Daniel Brandt effortlessly builds a bridge between electronic, creative krautrock and contemporary avantgarde.
Another exciting instrumentalist made of flesh and blood is the Swedish pianist and composer Shida Shahabi, who performs in the first half of the concert together with cellist Emma Augustsson. She made a name for herself amongst record critics with her debut album »Homes« in 2018, and has since established herself as one of the most interesting voices in contemporary music. Shahabi grew up in an Iranian family, and her music is a combination of sample-like minimalism, sparing melodic elements and quiet, melancholic but intense harmonic sequences that pull the listener in.
