Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchester / »Gershwin & Ravel«
Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
George Gershwin described the final movement of his own Concerto in F as an »orgy of rhythms«. There is also something orgiastic about Ravel’s »La Valse«, an ambiguous requiem to a century that had begun to fall apart. With these two pieces, Ravel’s choreographic symphony »Daphnis et Chloé« – his longest and most ambitious work –, and more than 200 performers, this will be an evening to remember.
Putting a concerto by George Gershwin alongside two pieces by Ravel is not as odd as it may first appear. Ravel was a big fan of Gershwin’s music and they both shared a passion for jazz. When Ravel toured the US for four months in 1928 the two composers met numerous times, played their work to each other and visited the »Savoy Ballroom« jazz club in Harlem together.
