Scenes from My Radio Play – A Collection of Stories
Reflector Laurie Anderson
In the 1970s she was a star of the New York art scene, and at the side of her husband Lou Reed she was one of the most glamorous figures in rock music for many years: Laurie Anderson. It’s become customary to refer to her art as »performance«, as she unites so many artistic disciplines on stage – language, song, music, video, projections, film, advanced electronics – in ever new combinations, always in her unmistakeable personal style. But at the bottom of her artist’s heart, Laurie Anderson sees herself simply as a storyteller.
Even as a child, she found narrated radio broadcasts much more interesting than music programmes. In »Scenes from My Radio Play«, Laurie Anderson draws on the rich body of subjects, ideas and stories where the profound and the comical often lie side by side, and autobiography is often close to universal truths. She tells her stories in a language that often combines poetry, imagination and rational comments on the status quo of American society in particular.
Tonight’s concert promises stagecraft in the spirit of radio plays, accompanied imaginatively and with variety by six musicians with whom Laurie Anderson has been improvising regularly for some time.
