Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden / Christian Thielemann
Mahler
A matter of the utmost sensibility
Good things come to those who wait. There is truth to be found in this saying, time and again. In the case of Christian Thielemann, the conductor and maestro of symphonic high Romanticism, he had to wait much of his life to make friends with Gustav Mahler. Only in the last decade or so has he slowly and cautiously begun to test out the Mahler waters. A sign of just how seriously he takes his deeply spiritual work. You must be aware of every detail – of this Thielemann is sure – and have to »finely adjust the tiniest of screws in those moment where you might think you have to plunge your brush deep into the paint pot«. With the »Sächsische Staatskapelle« though, whose fortunes he has guided as principal conductor since 2012, he is only too happy to engage with Mahler. There is a special union between the orchestra and conductor, cultivated over time and rooted as much in mutual trust as in absolute artistic harmony.
