Composing for the climate
The sea monster of mythology: for centuries the Leviathan – half whale, half dragon – has been lying on the ocean bed waiting for its time. It is perhaps no surprise that it now finally awakes and, in its contemporary form, calls attention not only with a full orchestral sound and pulsating rhythm, but also strikes out with plastic bottles and a specially created »Junk Metal Station«. Written for Alexej Gerassimez as part of the »Pastoral Project« for the Beethoven anniversary year in 2020, the Percussion Concerto by New Zealand composer John Psathas is a commentary on the climate crisis and ocean pollution.
