When two internationally acclaimed chamber music ensembles join forces to play a special masterpiece of Late Romantic French music, one can only regret that there are not more works for piano, violin and string quartet. At least there is one such in the repertoire – a marvellous piece from the pen of Ernest Chausson! And in tonight’s concert this gorgeous score is performed by two exceptional formations: the English Doric String Quartet and the likewise much-praised duo consisting of violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Cédric Tiberghien.
The works by Guillaume Lekeu and Claude Debussy that the two ensembles perform separately are no less lacking in charm and wit. Ibragimova and Tiberghien present the Violin Sonata by Belgian composer Guillaume Lekeu, which was given its premiere in 1983 by the great virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe. 1893 was also the year in which Debussy’s epoch-making string quartet had its first performance in Paris and cast open the gateway to modern music.
