Randall Goosby / Zhu Wang
FAST LANE – Young top musicians getting ready for a big career
Roots
When it comes to their careers, both of these musicians have long been in the fast lane. The American violinist Randall Goosby has performed with most of the top US orchestras. And Zhu Wang has been hailed as a »superb pianist« by the New York Times. With their duo programme, the pair now present works from the 2021 album »Roots«, a celebration of music by Black composers.
Especially for Randall Goosby, this musical commemoration of composers who faced racism and prejudice is a matter close to his heart. From Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, who was encouraged by Edward Elgar, Goosby has selected a delightful early suite.
After a sonatina by Coleridge-Taylor’s favourite composer Dvořák, there follows another suite, this one by William Grant Still from 1943. And before the evening comes to a close with an early violin sonata by Richard Strauss, who toured the US to great acclaim in 1904, Goosby presents two fantasias, which he rediscovered, by the American composer Florence Price.
