The Elbphilharmonie welcomes Rajendra Prasanna and his ensemble, a family of masters in the North Indian art of flute playing. His father Pandit Rajendra came from a family in Varanasi with deep roots in Indian classical music. The northern Indian city, which is also the birthplace of sitar master Ravi Shankar, is regarded as the subcontinent’s spiritual and cultural capital. Flutist Rajendra Prasanna and his sons Rajesh, Rishab and Ritesh, as well as the tabla player Athar Hussain, present their programme »The Art of Bansuri«.
Bansuri are usually transverse flutes made of bamboo, with six or seven fingerholes. The instrument is used in the classical and folk music of northern India. Its best-known representative is Hariprasad Chaurasia, who has also recorded music with John McLaughlin and Jan Garbarek. At this Rajendra Prasanna Ensemble concert, the audience can expect spiritual, often hypnotic Hindustani music that follows strict ritualistic sequences but that still calls for a high degree of improvisation from the musicians.
