Quatuor Modigliani / Schubert’s String Quartets I
Hamburg International Music Festival
From pupil to master
»For his father and his elder brothers it was an exquisite pleasure to play quartets with him. On these occasions, Franz always played the viola, his brothers Ignaz and Ferdinand the second and first violins respectively, while their father took the cello part,« a friend of the family wrote about these domestic concerts at the Schubert home. Eleven of Franz Schubert’s 15 string quartets were written for this purpose, works where the budding composer experimented and explored the music of famous predecessors on the way to finding his own musical voice.

The renowned Quatuor Modigliani traces the path from Schubert’s beginnings to his mastery of the form in three recitals at the Elbphilharmonie. The first evening opens with the G minor quartet D. 173 of 1815, in which the 18-year-old composer plays artfully with the examples set by Mozart and Beethoven.
The Quartet in E flat major dates from two years later, and was intended for performance by a professional ensemble – one of the reasons why it was long assumed not to have been written until 1824. The last piece on the programme, and at the same time its climax, is the highly dramatic Quartet in D minor »Death and the Maiden«, based on Schubert’s song of the same name.
