Bluegrass Meets Acoustic Pop and Debussy
The quintet led by inspired mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile blows away all the clichés about bluegrass music. The traditional music from the Appalachian Mountains expands into fantastic acoustic pop, and even takes on classical tones that lie somewhere between Debussy and Scriabin.
Banjo, mandolin and fiddle are the New Yorkers’ basic equipment: their songs sometimes indulge in minimal-music patterns, sometimes in borrowings from grunge and folk or in Britpop tunes. Thile’s piercing, charismatic falsetto voice vies with his virtuoso mandolin playing, while his four fellow musicians play with unexpected shifts of tempo and suprising harmonies, free from any gimmicks or electronic effects.
The Punch Brothers now present their latest album at the Elbphilharmonie. Their themes on »All Ashore Follows« are once again isolation in the digital era and life in the current political situation. The result is grandiose and moving roots music that has a message to convey, and will outlive the wave of hipster folk without any trouble.
