The Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis for Young Classical Artists has been awarded since 2015 – the internationally renowned prize not only evaluates the technical virtuosity of the applicants, but also places special emphasis on innovative concepts and visionary design. The young talents are given absolute freedom in their musical projects. The programme of the »Festival der Preisträger«, which takes place for the fifth time in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall, is also designed entirely according to the ideas and visions of the Fanny Mendelssohn Artists. The Elbphilharmonie provides the musicians with a prominent stage on which they can live out their artistic creativity and showcase their extraordinary musical talent in front of a large audience.

The Fanny Mendelssohn Artists featured in the Prizewinners’ Festival are composed of this year’s winner Philipp Schupelius (violoncello), the first Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis winner Tamás Pálfalvi (trumpet) as well as Dorothea Schupelius on violin and as host of the evening, Jelizaveta Vasiljeva on piano, Matthias Well on violin, Vera Karner on clarinet and Joséphine Olech on flute.

Departure and new beginnings is the motto of the concert programme that the Fanny Mendelssohn Artists have conceived especially for this concert. Not only do Hamburg and the Elbphilharmonie stand for new beginnings, but also the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis in particular. Manuel de Falla, Astor Piazzolla, Pablo Casals, Béla Bartók, Ludwig van Beethoven – each of the composers chosen by the young artists has a special connection to the theme »Celebrating Life! Departure into New Worlds«. Unfortunately, this is not always a positive theme: often the experiences cast in music come from wars and catastrophes. But they show that even the greatest suffering is followed by a new beginning and that life does go on. And that is what this evening is all about: about experiencing and about life itself – a shared musical celebration of life.
