Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra / Lang Lang / Manfred Honeck
Shostakovich / Bates / Mozart
Two longed-for Elbphilharmonie debuts at one stroke: when the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, one of America’s best orchestras, and Lang Lang, one of the most famous pianists of all time, finally pay the promoter Konzertdirektion Dr. Goette in Hamburg a call in autumn 2019, they fill in two missing pieces in the big kaleidoscope of artists that has been casting its light all over the world from the Elbe since 2017. Apart from Mozart, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will also be performing a piece by the Grammy-winning composer and electro DJ Mason Bates, which was commissioned to mark the 60th birthday of Manfred Honeck in autumn 2018. It contrasts with Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, a work that remains puzzling to this day.
