Pierre-Laurent Aimard / Ligeti Études
Hamburg International Music Festival
Modern and contemporary music is what Frenchman Pierre-Laurent Aimard does best. He was one of the founding members of the Ensemble Intercontemporain, which specialises in contemporary music, and he regularly includes the music of Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen and György Ligeti in his concert programmes. Aimard is known as a specialist in Ligeti’s complex and original piano etudes, which he now performs in their entirety at the Elbphilharmonie.
In these virtuosic studies, which were composed between 1985 and 2001, the Hungarian composer draws on Chopin’s concert etudes, but moves in very different sound spheres. The pieces exhibit influences ranging from the music of the West-African Aka people to Indonesian gamelan ensembles and Eric Satie.
Béla Bartók’s six-volume »Mikrokosmos«, composed between 1926 and 1937, is also made up of didactic pieces that become progressively more difficult, and thereby represents an ideal complement.
