Description

Not only arrangements but also acoustics make a piece of music when performed. One of the first to experiment with effects like reverberation and stereo sound were the cantors of San Marco of Venice in the 16th century. Among them was Giovanni Gabrieli, who positioned choirs on different galleries for the sake of acoustic effects. Kent Nagano now puts his »Canzones sacrae« together with Pierre Boulez‘ »Répons« und Brahms’ »A German Requiem« on stage.

Almost 400 years after Gabrieli, Pierre Boulez reawakened the idea of the cantors at San Marco of Venice in »Répons« and combined it with live electronics to a modernist masterpiece.

Hamburg’s versatile general music director Kent Nagano rounds off this evident combination of early and modern surround sound with Brahms’ »A German Requiem«, whose consoling chants perfectly fill the magnificent nave of St. Michael’s church.
