Blossom out of misery

The new concert season opens with Mahler’s so-called »Tragic« Symphony. More conventional than its predecessors but by no means lacking in surprises, the emotionally-charged Sixth represents a milestone in Mahler’s career. It was written between 1903 and 1905, in a phase marked by blows of fate that were to have a formative effect on the career of the then director of the Vienna Court Opera.
