»Touching glass with water-moistened fingers« was established as a musical instrument by no one less than Benjamin Franklin in 1761. He arranged a »scale« made of glasses onto a horizontal axis, which was rotated using a pedal: the glass harmonica was born. In its ethereal sounds Goethe believed one could hear »the lifeblood of the world«.

The KV 617 Quintet is Mozart’s last chamber music work. He wrote the piece in 1791 for the blind virtuosa Marianne Kirchgeßner. The String Quintet in E flat major and the famous Clarinet Quintet are two other late works by Mozart that are presented along with various compositions for glass harmonica in this concert.

In addition to the historic version, the instrument is also presented in its modern form, the verrophone, which was introduced to the world in 1983, a double version of which can be played by two musicians at the same time.
