Anyone who thinks that Franz Schubert, Richard Strauss and Anton Webern couldn’t be more different from one another if they tried will be surprised by this selection of pieces, all of which stand firmly in the tradition of the High Romantic.

While Webern’s »Slow Movement for String Quartet« is audibly indebted to Brahms, the composers of the Classical and Early Romantic periods provided the inspiration for Richard Strauss’s String Quartet in A major, Op. 2, which he wrote at the early age of 16.

Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, Op. post. 163, is set for the unusual combination of two violins, a viola and two cellos. Music critic Joachim Kaiser once commented on the work, which Schubert wrote only a few months before his death: »No man can completely work out the musical mystery of this work or put it into words.«
