»In 1803 the Scottish publisher George Thomson commissioned Beethoven to arrange Scottish, Irish and Welsh folk songs for voice and piano trio. Lost battles, places of yearning, passion unfulfilled and distant lovers are just a few of the many subjects that the composer set to music for this unusual combination. Though he embarked on the project as a way to make some money, Beethoven brought increasing enthusiasm to the task, and in the course of time even added arrangements of folk songs from other countries to a collection already numbering 180 pieces. Among the additions were Spanish boleros, Tyrolean yodelling songs and folk tunes from Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Germany, Portugal, Italy and Hungary. The Hungarian elements are taken up again in the second half of the concert with the ›Rondo alla Zingarese‹ in Brahms’s wonderful Piano Quartet in G minor.« (Solveigh Rose)
Please note: The world premiere of Aziza Sadikova’s »Beethoven-Spiegelung I« can regrettably not be performed in this concert due to organisational reasons. The work will be presented in a later concert.
