Patricia Kopatchinskaja / Markus Hinterhäuser
2nd Hamburg International Music Festival
Description
For many years, Moldovian-Austrian violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and successful Vienna Festival director and pianist Markus Hinterhäuser have dedicated themselves to the Russian composer Galina Ustvolskaya. Their interpretations tell the story of the hardships of Ustvolskaya’s time: an era characterised by horrible deprivation and terror from the Stalin regime.
»Spiritual, but not religious«: this is a description of Galina Ustvolskaya’s music in her own words, making her sound simultaneously archaic and creedal. In both her violin sonata (1952) and her duo for violin and piano (1964), mysterious, floating tones are met with unruly rhythms and merciless bow strokes. Nevertheless, when this unsettling music is over, a feeling comparable to balance is perceived.
Just as archaic and creedal, but more heavenly are the polyphonic vocal works of the Norte Dame school around the year 1200, to be heard in tonight’s concert as a juxtaposition to the works of Ustvolskaya. Interpreting the works are the five singer-soloists from French Ensemble Gilles Binchois.
