Oum
»Daba« – Reflektor Angélique Kidjo
Urban caravanserai
Casablanca is the birthplace of the singer Oum, who can be heard in the early afternoon of the last day of the »Reflektor Angélique Kidjo«. The unusual time of day in the Recital Hall affords the chance to immerse oneself in a wonderful and special musical world. In Oum’s songs, the characteristic intervals and ornaments of Arab melodies are coupled in a sensitive and surprising way with Western electronica and trumpet and saxophone lines, transporting the music to a realm that is the product of artistic imagination.
Oum’s flawless voice is light and immediate, and it takes us with the utmost grace and precision through the mysterious labyrinths in which she and her band arrange their songs.
This afternoon concert promises to be nothing short of extraordinary. To put yourself in the mood, we recommend the 2019 album »Daba«, which conveys a good impression of her band’s gently seductive sound. Another fascinating side of her art is shown on »HALS« (2022), a superb duo project featuring Oum and her saxophonist and electronic master M-Carlos.
