Oslo Philharmonic / Klaus Mäkelä
Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 4 – Hamburg International Music Festival
Sibelius in their DNA
When Klaus Mäkelä took up the position of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra’s music director in 2020, he had already made plans for a concert project that was particularly close to his heart: the performance of the complete Sibelius symphonies. For it was not only the Finnish conductor who grew up with this music. »Sibelius is likewise part of the orchestra’s DNA,« Mäkelä says. On the second evening in the Hamburg Sibelius cycle, we hear the Second Symphony, the composer’s most popular, together with his Fourth, perhaps the most important from a compositional point of view.
