Organ Day
Organ concert for the Hamburg Port Anniversary
All stops
The organ is also called the »Queen of Instruments«, and its impressive appearance alone is more than worthy of this title: with its 4,765 pipes, the Elbphilharmonie organ weighs around 25 tonnes and measures 15 by 15 metres. But how does such an instrument actually work? And what sets the organ in the Great Hall apart from its sisters in churches and other concert halls? At an entertaining organ concert for the Hamburg Port Anniversary, three outstanding organists will come together to present the extraordinary instrument in all its facets.
There will be two organists from the main churches in the neighbourhood: Thomas Dahl from St. Petri and Manuel Gera, who was organist at St. Michaelis for a long time and now works in Jüterbog. In addition, Thomas Cornelius, who regularly performs as organist for the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and other ensembles. He knows the Elbphilharmonie organ like no other and provides exciting insights into the fascinating functionality of the instrument.
All three musicians are virtuoso masters at the keys and pedals with a particular penchant for improvisation. Six hands, six feet, one organ: a varied concert evening that literally pulls out all the stops! And because they are always up for surprises, the three organists even invite their audience to send in music requests via social media, which they are then ready to improvise wildly on.
