Telemann Festival
Georg Philipp Telemann held an important position at Hamburg’s principal churches. As the »Director musices« he played in one of these churches every week on a rotational basis. At the time, the organ in the principal church of Sankt Katharinen was considered to be the jewel in the crown among all of Hamburg’s organs. As part of the Telemann Festival, the Baroque master’s works are now performed in their original settings: Andreas Fischer, the church’s Musical Director, performs an organ concert at Sankt Katharinen.
Johann Sebastian Bach also played the Sankt Katharinen organ and described it as »a superb instrument in every detail«. Bach could »not praise the beauty and variety of the sound of the pipe divisions highly enough,« reported one contemporary witness about a concert in 1720; Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542 dates from this time.
The historic organ was completely destroyed in the Second World War, but was gradually restored between 2009 and 2013. Today, the main organ of Sankt Katharinen is once again one of the jewels of Hamburg’s organ landscape, just as it was in Telemann’s and Bach’s time.
