Mozart: »Haffner« Symphony & Requiem
The magic power of music
The history of how the Mozart Requiem came to be written is often told as a story full of mysterious references, nocturnal messengers and mystic premonitions. The legends surrounding the composition of this magnificent work, where Death himself is said to have taken the pen from Mozart’s hand, are in all likelihood nothing but fairy tales, but this doesn’t really matter once you have heard this moving music performed in concert.
The Requiem, which is indeed one of the last works to come from Mozart’s pen, has no need of a mysterious background to unfold its magic. The opening chorus already brings the listener out in goose pimples, not to mention the many enchanting arias and moving choral passages. In the hands of Philippe Herreweghe and his top ensembles from Paris and Ghent, this is a true concert highlight.
