Grand opera to kick-off the season
The Teatro alla Scala in Milan, or La Scala for short, is arguably the most famous opera house in the world. The mere mention of the name is enough to get opera fans excited. Riccardo Chailly has been at the helm as music director since 2015. It was more than half a century ago though that the Milan-born conductor made his debut here – as assistant to Claudio Abbado. With this vita, it is hard to imagine any other conductor alive today with such close ties to La Scala and its ensembles.
The choir and orchestra conducted by Chailly thrilled audiences back in 2018 with two overwhelming performances of Giuseppe Verdi’s »Requiem« at the Elbphilharmonie. Now this year they are back to open the season with some of the most famous and beautiful opera overtures and choruses from Verdi’s masterful operas, many of which were premiered at La Scala. Classics such as the Prisoners’ Chorus from »Nabucco«, the triumphant »Gloria all’Egitto« from »Aida« and the ballet music from »Don Carlos« are, of course, all in the line-up for this spectacle.
