Omar Sosa & NDR Bigband: »es:sensual«
Transatlantic Festival / Final Concert
From Cuba to the west coast of the USA via Ecuador, and finally to Europe: the legendary Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, who now lives in Barcelona, knows everything there is to know about transatlantic journeys. In his music, Sosa has always travelled freely between Latin jazz, his Afro-Cuban roots, European classical music and hip hop. With the NDR Big Band and his new project »es:sensual«, he is the perfect choice for the »Transatlantic Festival«.
Omar Sosa is an expert on the African roots of Latin American music. He has journeyed to Ecuador to trace the African origins of elements of the culture of Esmeraldas, a small region in the north of the country; he dedicated his albums »Prietos« (2001) and »Sentir« (2002) to the instruments of the North-African Gnawa culture; he drew inspiration from hip hop in Cuba in the 1990s; and he engages intensively with African spiritualism as a devotee of the Afro-Cuban religion of Santería.
After his first collaborative project with the NDR Big Band (»Ceremony«) was promptly awarded the ECHO Jazz Prize, Sosa has now selected some classics from his extensive compositional oeuvre for »es:sensual« and, together with the Brazilian arranger and cellist Jacques Morelenbaum, moulded them into a new sound format: »I want to show my electronic side, as well as the Afro-Cuban one,« explains Sosa.
