Winter Journeys
In a cross-disciplinary performance, singers, performers and musicians set off on a journey of discovery to explore Schubert’s treasure-trove of songs in the here and now. They do so using not only their voices, but their entire repertoire of feelings and movements. In between the opposing poles of intimacy and escape, between past and present, they evolve new forms of interpretation and thus find their own very individual and modern approach to the music of the past.
Schubert’s »Winterreise« (A Winter’s Journey) tells the story of a wanderer between worlds; it’s a tale of farewell, of loneliness and of always feeling like a stranger. What can Schubert’s lieder tell us today, in a time of mass migration? How have the sentiments documented in Schubert’s music changed in the 21st century? What does alienation sound like today? Songs from the composer’s cycles »Die schöne Müllerin«, »Winterreise« and »Schwanengesang« and other Schubert lieder are interwoven in this performance, and the scenery conjures up topical societal associations.
