Film and live music

According to the Wiener Zeitung, no other ensemble embodies »the coolness of classical music« as strongly as Hamburg’s Ensemble Resonanz, the Ensemble in Residence of the Elbphilharmonie’s Recital Hall. This evening they will perform the multimedia work »Fuel« by Julia Wolfe, commissioned by the Ensemble.

The composition »Fuel« was created in 2007 as part of the film of the same title by multimedia artist and experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison. The post-minimalistic composition shows clear references to Steve Reich, one of the pioneers of minimal music. It is characterised by both driving rhythms as well as moving, dramatic moments, and was inspired by the enormous forces that drive globalised world trade. Scenes from huge container transfer sites in Hamburg and New Jersey’s harbours also feature as backdrops in Bill Morrison’s film. The film focuses less on geopolitical conflicts arising from the lack of natural resources than on the global dependence on these resources.

Wolfe and Morrison are regarded as one of the power couples of New York’s avant-garde scene. Together with David Lang, they founded the legendary Bang on a Can collective in the 1980s. Their creative collaboration repeatedly led to major successes over the decades.
