Neue Philharmonie Hamburg / Jens Plücker / Simon Kannenberg
On Joachim Raff’s 200th birthday
Rediscovered
Joachim Raff is one of the most exciting rediscoveries in classical music. The 19th-century composer, unlike many contemporaries of his such as Franz Liszt and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, was quickly forgotten. But Raff’s works did make an impact when he was alive. His Third Symphony »Im Walde« (In the Forest), for example, briefly made him the most-performed symphonic composer in the German-speaking lands during the 1870s. The Neue Philharmonie Hamburg now celebrates the versatile and influential composer’s 200th birthday with precisely that symphony.
