Hamburg debut with an exciting programme
»A marvellous tone, highly refined vibrato, both the left and right hand are immaculate – a true musician.« This is Anne-Sophie Mutter talking about the Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández. The legendary violinist had already scheduled a European tour together with her young colleague, but then the first coronavirus lockdown put an end to their plans. Notwithstanding, Ferrández has already appeared with world-class ensembles. Now he is giving his first concert with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, featuring Ernest Bloch’s »Schelomo«.
In Bloch’s Late Romantic programme music, the cello stands for the voice of King Solomon (Hebrew: Schelomo). The wise ruler converses with his people, which is represented by the many parts of the orchestra. The composer captures the Jewish spirit of the Old Testament story in Oriental timbres.German-Japanese conductor Erina Yashima, recently appointed principal conductor at the Berlin Comic Opera, links the Biblical epic with the present in the Middle East; she chooses the orchestral piece »Ramal« by Syrian native Kareem Roustom for the purpose. As the New York Times put it, this is a »driving, colourful work that appeals directly to the listener«. The composer wrote it in 2014 for Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. The Heilbronn conductor brings her debut concert to a close with Dvořák’s vibrant Symphony No. 5, whose charming folk melodies have led some critics to call it his »Pastoral«.
