NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Krzysztof Urbański
Ligeti / Sibelius / Chopin
A number of artists only get the recognition they deserve posthumously – one of those is the Polish-Russian composer Mieczysław Weinberg. He suffered under two dictatorships – German and Soviet – and always stood in the shadow of his friend Dmitri Shostakovich. Until around ten years ago, Weinberg was still almost completely unknown. However, things have since changed, and it is high time the symphonic music of the Shostakovich devotee found its way to the Elbphilharmonie. Krzysztof Urbański presents the Third Symphony, into which Weinberg incorporated folk music from Poland and Belarus. The Finnish composer Jean Sibelius also explores his attachment to his native country in his famous violin concerto, for which the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra is joined by the star violinist Joshua Bell. Ligeti’s avant-garde masterpiece »Atmosphères« provides the keyword for its own ethereous beginning in the title.
