Description

French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet has been delighting audiences for years with the apparently effortless elegance of his playing. In his guest appearances in November with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Thibaudet joins forces with conductor Yu Long to bridge the musical gap between East and West.

Thibaudet not only feels at home with his countrymen Debussy, Ravel and Satie: he also shares their fondness for jazz and the music of the Far East. In this concert, he performs two exciting repertoire gems: George Gershwin’s »I Got Rhythm«, and Chinese composer Qigang Chen’s piano concerto »Er Huang«, which was first performed in New York in 2009.

It’s the variation form that links these two pieces: while Chen takes the well-known Peking Opera melody »Er Huang Yuan Ban« as the basis for musical variations, the Gershwin fantasises on the composer’s own Broadway song.
