Multiverse Esa-Pekka Salonen – 2G+ AND PHYSICAL DISTANCE / Please note the change of programme
Unequal twins
Not often do we find convincing multiple talents in today’s concert halls: is Esa-Pekka Salonen a conductor who composes, or a composer who conducts? Or is he a music teacher and festival director who also composes and conducts? The busy Finnish musician is currently not only head of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra: the graduate of Helsinki’s legendary Sibelius Academy also finds time »on the side« to write impressive new works that are performed all over the world by top orchestras. And as if that were not enough, Salonen has also built up a reputation in the last few years as a tireless musical innovator, as a pioneer of digital education and a keen founder of festivals.
In the first programme oft he »Multiverse Esa-Pekka Salonen« the Finnish musician conducts his work »Gemini«, first premiered in the 2018/19 season, for the first time in Germany. Just like the two unequal twins of Greco-Roman mythology, the two movements »Pollux« and »Castor« share a common DNA, even if the works appear completely different musically.
