NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Daniel Müller-Schott / Jukka-Pekka Saraste
Salonen / Lalo / Sibelius
Milestone in Nordic symphonic music
Sibelius and Saraste – It sounds good on paper and is also synonymous with highly coherent musical interpretations. A graduate of Jorma Panula’s legendary talent factory at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Jukka-Pekka Saraste has been immersed in the music of his famous compatriot from a young age. Leading the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, the new conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra presents what is arguably Jean Sibelius’ most beloved symphony. A milestone in Nordic symphonic music, his »Symphony No. 2« inspired a whole string of Scandinavian composers to write similar works.
As if that wasn’t enough of the Finnish: Saraste opens the concert with another fellow countryman and esteemed colleague. Esa-Pekka Salonen wrote his work »Fog«, inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s »Violin Partita No.3 in E major«, in 2019 to mark and celebrate the 90th birthday of Frank Gehry, architect of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
