Pintscher: New Work / Mahler: Symphony No. 6
»To a certain extent, Gustav Mahler had an influence on every composer who came after him: he had the courage to be subjective.« Thus the composer, conductor and Elbphilharmonie Artist in Residence Matthias Pintscher characterises his great predecessor. Mahler’s performing instructions for his Sixth Symphony give evidence of the great emotionality of his music: the score contains markings like »As if lashed with a whip – Full of anger – Like the blow of an axe«.
Mahler even incorporated goats’ bells and hammer blows into his music: he knew no limits to musical expression. This determination to articulate his personal feelings also marks Pintscher’s own work: »I write music entirely from within myself« is his maxim. His latest composition is also closely linked to the place where it is now heard: he wrote it specially for the Elbphilharmonie’s inaugural season.
