Pintscher: World Premiere / Mahler: Symphony No. 6
»In a way, Gustav Mahler influenced all who wrote music after him: he had the boldness to be subjective«. This is how the Elbphilharmonie composer, conductor and artist in residence Matthias Pintscher characterises his great colleague. The powerful emotionality of Mahler’s music is exposed in the recital instructions for his sixth symphony: »Like whipping something – break into it furiously – like the fall of an axe«, as stated in the score.
Even the jingling of cowbells and hammer blows were integrated into his music; for him musical expression knew no boundaries. This unconditional drive of personal articulation also shaped Pintscher’s own creativity: »I write music that comes completely from inside me« is his motto. His newest work is also closely connected to the place where it will be heard: Pintscher has written it especially for the opening season of the Elbphilharmonie.
