The Munich Philharmonic is an institution – not only in its Bavarian home, but also among top orchestras around the world. The tradition-rich orchestra has been conducted by legends such as Gustav Mahler, and has performed the premieres of important milestones in music history. The Munich musicians now travel north for a two-day guest appearance at the Hamburg International Music Festival. Following the departure of Valery Gergiev, Daniele Gatti, one of the world’s leading conductors, takes over. This change of conductors has also led to a change in the programme. Instead of the premiere of Thierry Escaich’s new violin concerto, the orchestra is performing Max Bruch’s popular First Violin Concerto with soloist Renaud Capuçon. Anton Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony remains on the programme for the second half.
The Munich Philharmonic has been performing Anton Bruckner’s monumental symphonies for more than 100 years. With his incomplete Ninth, the Austrian composer not only left an enormous musicological puzzle to posterity, he also pointed far ahead to the future of music with bold harmonies and rhythmic power. In contrast, Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto, with its vocal melodies, is one of the biggest hits in the violin repertoire.
