Monteverdi: Ulisse / Europa Galante / Fabio Biondi
»Venice« Easter Festival
Claudio Monteverdi is considered a co-inventor and the most important pioneer of opera. The 450th anniversary of his birth was celebrated in 2017. Monteverdi expressed the passions of his characters through emotionally charged music – especially in later operas such as »Ulisse« (Odysseus), which he composed specially for Venice, where the first public opera houses were established around that time.
In »Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria«, the Greek hero returns home after a long odyssey to see his wife Penelope thronged by pushy suitors. Only by means of a cunning ruse does he succeed in winning her back. Italian Baroque orchestra Europa Galante and its founder and director Fabio Biondi come to the Elbphilharmonie to share fascinating insights into a time when opera was still in its infancy.
