Description

Hamburg’s »Director musices« Georg Philipp Telemann was always in tune with the times. When in 1722, in distant Persia, an Afghan chieftain defeated the Persian army, seized their capital city and took to the Peacock Throne, the European press was soon reporting on »the rebellion underway in Persia« and »the new Persian monarch MyrrWays«. Telemann and his librettist Johann Samuel Müller gratefully seized on the Miriways hype and brought the material to the stage of Hamburg’s Oper am Gänsemarkt, where Telemann had been director since 1722.

The German public was only too keen to hear inspiring stories about conflicts between love and reasons of state played out before the exotic backdrop of distant Isfahān. »Miriways« was given its premiere in Hamburg on 26 May 1728, but almost three centuries would then pass before Reinhard Goebel dug the score from the archives and brought the music to life again in Magdeburg in 1992. Conducted by Bernard Labadie, the light opera in three acts about Miriways, the »Persian Cromwell«, now returns to the city in which it was composed.

Please note the change of artist: Michael Volle has regrettably had to cancel his appearance in the title role in Telemann’s opera »Miriways« at the opening concert of the Telemann Festival on 24 November due to illness. André Morsch has kindly agreed to rehearse the challenging role in the rarely performed opera at short notice and to step in for Michael Volle.
