Matthias Goerne / Christian Schmitt
Organ Concerto with Song
When two of the best-known artists of their generation join forces, the result is often something special. And the combination of lieder and organ is nothing if not unusual. Matthias Goerne is a celebrated lieder singer, while Christian Schmitt is a brilliant organist. In this concert he accompanies Goerne on the organ in lieder of the Romantic era, the golden age of the German art song.
Names like Wolf, Brahms and Reger stand with good reason for gems of lieder culture. The organ building and organ music of the Romantic period in turn were marked by a spirit of change, with the dynamic and technical limits of the instrument being redefined. But the modern organ at the Elbphilharmonie will certainly be able to cope when Christian Schmitt tests its limits.
