Martin Grubinger / The Percussive Planet
Century of Percussion
Just a few years ago, percussionists were no more than the quiet men in the last row of the orchestra, or the long-haired rockers at the back of the band. But then Martin Grubinger appeared on the scene, and literally revolutionised the music world at a stroke. No one before him had ever placed the diversity of percussion instruments in the limelight so effectively, appealingly and with such virtuosity.
So when the top Austrian percussionist proclaims »The Century of Percussion« and makes a stop in Hamburg together with his world-famous Percussive Planet Ensemble, we can look forward to a superlative concert.
Grubinger himself explains: »From Japan’s Taiko drummers, the gamelan ensembles of South-East Asia, the West African djembe and balafon masters, and the 20,000 drummers of the Basel Fastnacht to the percussion centres of Latin America and North American jazz history, percussion lives from its universality. It recognises no boundaries, and is unique in its variety. Our aim is to present this variety to the public in »The Century of Percussion«.
During his residence weekend at the Elbphilharmonie, Martin Grubinger presents four thrilling programmes: two with his Percussive Planet Ensemble and the other two with family members – wife Ferzan Önder and her twin sister Ferhan on piano, and Grubinger’s percussionist father.
