Mahler Chamber Orchestra / Lang Lang / Andris Nelsons
Beethoven: Coriolan Ouverture, Piano Concerto No. 3 & Symphony No. 5 – Hamburg International Music Festival
Three times Beethoven in C minor
Is extreme drama characteristic of the key of C minor? Or do we just connect it with drama because Beethoven wrote so many important works in this key? It is not only the famous Fifth Symphony with its iconic opening chords that is set in the »Fate« key: there is also the Third Piano Concerto and the overture to the tragic tale of the Roman general Coriolanus – »heavy with significance, dark, but with heroic traits« (SWR). In tonight’s programme, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra immerses us in this drama. The outstanding Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons keeps the tension high, and Lang Lang contributes a hint of lightness with his elegant performance of the solo piano part.
