Great choral works are a specialism of the Greek-Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis, who has been shaking up the cultural scene from his base in the remote Russian city of Perm for years. His recordings of Mozart operas caused quite a stir, as did his versions of Verdi’s »Macbeth« and »La Traviata«. And even if Brahms’s »German Requiem« is one of the most performed of all requiems, Teodor Currentzis is sure to tease something new out of this masterpiece too – that much is guaranteed.

Please note: Dimitris Tiliakos has regrettably been forced to cancel his appearance in this concert due to familial reasons. Baritone Tobias Berndt has kindly agreed to step in. The programme remains unchanged.

With his Requiem, Brahms created an unusual funeral mass that stays true to tradition, while also carrying the composer’s unique subjective stamp. Despite the sorrowful theme, the work also exudes a sense of solace and optimism.

The term »requiem« refers to the Latin funeral mass, which is usually based on a standard Latin text. Brahms, however, selected various texts from the Old and New Testaments for his work.
