John Coltrane was one of the great legends of jazz history. Like Miles Davis, he transported hard bop into the modern era, and with the other members of his quartet – McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones – he wrote music history. Tonight Wolfgang Schmidtke and his ensemble present Coltrane’s best-known pieces in »A Tribute to John Coltrane«. Heinz Sauer, who used to play sax in the Albert Mangelsdorff Quartet, and Uwe Oberg round off the programme with compositions of their own dedicated to the great master of modern jazz.
